when it comes time for him to choose between the league and Europe
around Feb/March we'll pounce. We always have kicked in around that
time so until then....... be united, be strong because this is
Manchester United and we will not be silenced and roll over like the
Gunners and liverpool did. This time we fight them!

KUNAL ... doesn't really matter even if crespo and robben played for
the rent boys. the way our midfield played it doesn't matter who
the opposition was because they just totally outplayed them. i am
not sold on crespo on club level. robben is an outstanding left guy
but he doesn't like to play a rough game. chelski lost the match
and so we move on to charlton!

at times. They were fearless and frightening. We didn't lose many! I
felt for him and Paul Scholes when they missed out on the European
Cup final after picking up a yellow card in the semi-final. But it
showed you what Roy is like because, although he knew he would miss
the final, he produced an unbelievable performance against Juventus.
That summed it up. He dragged Manchester United from 2-0 down to win
3-2. He was fantastic. It has to be your worst nightmare to be
suspended for a European Cup final but he put it out of his mind. He
is a great player and a legend."

'Britons have a curious attitude towards foreign participation in
their home-grown sports. South African-born Kevin Pietersen was
hailed as an English cricketing hero during the summer. Canadian-born
tennis player Greg Rusedski is a firm favourite at the All England
club. Sven-Goran Eriksson, on the other hand, has recently been
lambasted for his lack of passion at the helm of English football.

But for many devotees of the beautiful game, the purchase of
Manchester United by the American serial entrepreneur Malcolm Glazer
in May was the final straw. Fans issued death threats to the 76-year-
old businessman known as "the Leprechaun" for his ginger beard and
small stature. Even the new Archbishop of York, the Rt Rev John
Sentamu, was said to be "horrified" by the takeover.

Yet despite all the sound and fury, season-ticket sales have not
suffered significantly. Average attendance has enjoyed a slight rise,
while the rest of the Premiership has been suffering a stark decline.
Fans even queued for autographs when Glazer's sons attended their
first match at Old Trafford, although one complains: "It took me
longer to get out of the car park while they were smuggled on to a
private helicopter."

"We all felt that the focus would return to the team once the season
had got under way," says an Old Trafford spokesman. For the most
part, so it has proved, with loyal supporters resorting to a very
British sense of irony. "Rooney's scored a touchdown," they sang
after the potato-faced striker put United 2-0 up at Goodison Park.
The Mirror has had fun, too, with a regular column called Malcolm
Glazer Talks Soccer. "Yo, Sir Alec," it asked on August 29. "How many
dollars will it cost me to buy this pitcher Flintoff?"

Not everyone has been so forgiving. Now playing nine levels below the
Premiership in the North West Counties Second Division is FC United
of Manchester (FCUM), formed in June this year by disenchanted
Manchester United fans. "This is not just a reaction to Malcolm
Glazer," said one member of the steering committee. "It is about
taking a stand for the vast number of ordinary fans who have been
priced out of the game in recent years."

Season ticket holders at FCUM are certainly enjoying excellent value
for money on their £112 investment (compared with £684 for a season
ticket at Old Trafford). Their team is currently top of the league
and attracting crowds in excess of 2,000 in a division which averaged
only 71 a game last season.

"There is a brilliant atmosphere on the terraces," says club
secretary Luke Zentar. Favourite chants include "Stand up cos you've
got no seats"; "FC United, the only club in Manchester not in debt";
and "Marginson's fruit & veg army" (Karl Marginson, the team's
manager, gets up at 3am every day to deliver groceries).

Stars include Barrie George, who keeps goal for England's partially
sighted team, and Paul Mitten, grandson of the legendary Busby Babe
winger, Charlie Mitten. Rory Patterson - who was voted player of the
month in August - has gained the soubriquet "the man with no name"
after playing his opening matches with no number on his back.

"We're not an anti-United vehicle," insists Zentar, somewhat
incongruously. "Many of our fans still support both teams, and we
announce the results from Old Trafford over the Tannoy."

As the furore over Glazer subsides a couple of stops down the
Metrolink, the better-known Manchester United is, understandably,
more worried about its recent on-pitch troubles. "We bear them no ill-
will at all," says a spokesman.'

'Manchester United, who will cease to be a plc later this month when
the Glazer family compulsorily buy out the last few people who still

United had enjoyed that position for eight years through their Stock
Market valuation and their income. But since the American business
tycoon Malcolm Glazer and his family finally succeeded in their

For Perez this is justification of the policy he initiated five years
ago when he was elected president. His first step was to sign
galacticos such as Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David
Beckham. In those five years Perez has more than tripled the club's
revenue from sponsorship and merchandising.

Speculation is rife that United could even propose a draft agreement

'Britain's new cable giant is planning an audacious bid to undercut
Sky by offering Premiership football subscription packages for as
little as £10 a month. The company to be formed by the merger of NTL
and Telewest is planning to offer an estimated £200m a year for
Premiership rights if the European Commission rules that no single
broadcaster can bid for more than 50% of the games. In 2003 Sky paid
£1.02bn for an exclusive three-year deal to televise all live
Premiership games.

Simon Duffy, the new company's chief executive-in-waiting, said
yesterday that Sky had underpaid for football rights and a fairer
auction would generate more cash for clubs and better value for
supporters. He held out the prospect of some matches being shown live
on free-to-air channels.

A bid from NTL depends on the Commission being successful in
restructuring the auction's rules. It is preparing legal action
against the league for failing to take sufficient steps to stop Sky
renewing its monopoly. In 2003 Sky won the rights to screen all 138
live games a season, despite an attempt by the Commission to
introduce more competition. Sky outbid all other broadcasters for the
four separate packages of matches.

Sky's rivals support the Commission's view that the new contract for
2007-10 should limit any single broadcaster to 50% of the available
matches. Duffy said: "If you look at the way the Premier League has
been bid for and sold over the last several years ... the amount of
money going into the game has gone down and the amount of money
people have to pay to watch Premiership games on TV has gone up. That
can't be right." With a combined total of 5m customers, the new cable
company believes it has the muscle to take on Sky, which has 7.8m
subscribers. NTL plans a separate, dedicated Premiership channel,
with subscriptions costing around £10 a month. Sky Sports packages -
which include four channels showing a range of sports - cost between
£28 and £34 a month.

"We want [football fans] to watch as many games as they can at the
best prices they can without having to watch a lot of other
channels," said Duffy. The cable operator believes the deal for the
2007-10 rights should also include live Premiership matches on free-
to-air channels for the first time. He told Radio 5 Live: "We believe
we can take money out of Sky's pocket and give it back to the game
and into people's pockets."

'Richard Scudamore is paid hefty bonuses for securing the Premier
League's lucrative television deals. This has made him the highest-
paid executive in football. His first bonus in 2001 was £320,000,
which took his pay to £653,495.

In 2002 Scudamore's bonus, specifically related to the Premiership's
broadcasting agreements, was £325,000, swelling his pay to £717,000.
The following year it was £200,000 out of his total pay of £628,000.
In 2004 Scudamore was paid a £400,000 bonus which gave him his
highest pay package of all: £866,000.

He and the Premier League staff present the European Commission's
challenge, not without feeling, as a threat to a functioning league
and to payments to the Football Foundation - as a cracking up of
football as we know it. Yet it is true that Scudamore is rewarded
hugely for bringing his 20 paymasters their habitual TV bonanza.

In the opinion of Labour MPs, many of whom represent poor
constituencies with dire public football facilities where fans cannot
afford to go to matches or where the local club has been in severe
financial difficulties partly due to the gap between the Premiership
and the rest, Scudamore may find the whole campaign a harder sell

'Long-suffering referees on the receiving end of Sir Alex Ferguson's
tongue have never considered any aspect of the Manchester United
manager to be "devoid of any distinctive character". But a High Court
judge begged to differ, ruling that one of the most famous names in
football was simply too common to allow Sir Alex to trademark it and
secure the exclusive right to sell posters and photographs of himself.

Judge Charles Hamilton had been asked to examine whether Sir
Alexander Chapman Ferguson may be registered as a trademark. A ruling
in his favour would have meant his name could not be used without
permission on goods and services from dolls and posters to pencil
cases and even magazine articles.

In the case of posters and photographs and other written matter, the
judge ruled that the 63-year-old has no right and his name should not
be registered under the 1994 Trademarks Act. In a written judgment
almost as opaque as one of the Scotsman's press conferences, the
judge said that since Sir Alex's name was "devoid of any character",
its use on printed material did not convey a sense of who produced
the material and so did not enable that individual to capitalise
financially from using the name. Rather, it was simply a means of
identification. As such, it could not therefore be trademarked.

Various extracts from internet sites showed that the name Alex
Ferguson was used to identify photo-graphs, posters and prints, the
judge said. "These references underline the importance that in
relation to certain goods, the mark should not be registered."

Manchester United has refused to say if Sir Alex will bring out a
range of his own goods, so the man with the ordinary name is limited
to his £4m-a-year salary.'

'His lawyer Alan Fiddes said he would appeal against the decision
under the Human Rights Act.

"Our argument is that Sir Alex Ferguson and other famous people are
being discriminated against because they are famous," he said.

"A non-famous person would be able to trademark their image, but
because Sir Alex is already famous he cannot."

Some footballers have successfully trademarked themselves in this
area by applying before they became famous such as Joe Cole who did
this before he was a West Ham first teamer.

"He clearly had very good advice," Mr Fiddes added.

Non-celebrities find it much easier to prevent the use of their
images on posters.

Mr Fiddes said famous people were treated differently because the
regulators thought the public would not see the image being featured
as an indication of endorsement.

"If we win, Sir Alex would be able to sue someone for trademark
infringement if they printed a poster with his name on it," said Mr
Fiddes.

"It's another weapon in his armoury for him to stop people exploiting
his brand image."

TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT

Sir Alex, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, had hoped to get exclusive rights to
sell posters and photographs of himself.

But trademark judge Charles Hamilton ruled the manager's name
was "devoid of any distinctive character".

Sir Alex is also waiting to hear the outcome of a second bid to
benefit from using his name on goods such as jewellery, DVDs,
computer games and toy dolls.

If there are no objections, it will go through on 26 November.'

names because they registered them before they were famous.

Mr Fiddes said that Cole's case showed the inconsistency of the
ruling. "He applied when he was still young and he got it," he said.

If Sir Alex succeeds, he will open the floodgates for other
celebrities who want to make money out of posters bearing their image.

David Beckham would stand to gain hundreds of thousands of pounds if
he were able to control the use of his name on posters bearing his
image. He earns more from endorsements and merchandising than he does
from playing football.

Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney have also protected their names for non-
poster merchandise including umbrellas, key rings, dolls and
medallions.

Sir Alex has also applied for trademarks for a range of products
including clothing and commemorative coins.

These are likely to pass unopposed. Mr Fiddes said that Sir Alex had
plans to exploit all of his trademarks, but declined to comment on
whether a Sir Alex Ferguson doll would be forthcoming.

Mark Hickey, a trademark specialist for Murgitroyd & Company, said
that it was difficult to judge when individuals had become too famous
to be allowed to register their name for posters.

Celebrities cannot register their names for "image carrier"
trademarks, such as posters, but non-celebrities can

'English soccer's most famous club, Manchester United, has taken
centre stage in this year's hottest theatre production in Iran.

Extra seating had to be set up on the stage itself to accommodate the
crowds who flocked to see Iranian writer-director Mohammad
Rahmanian's F.A.N.S, which depicts a dysfunctional, soccer-mad family
living in 1960s Manchester.

Now embarking on an international tour including Sweden and Canada,
the play centres on the life of the Shelton family -- Frankie, Agnes,
Nancy and Sonny -- whose first initials make up the play's title and
its central theme.

"I had wanted to write about prejudice-induced violence for a long
time until I hit on football (as the vehicle) and where on earth
could be a better location for a football play than England?"
Rahmanian told Reuters during a break in rehearsals.

"The research for this work took two years. I went to different Web
sites, interviewed fans of several teams and all that made this play
one of the toughest ones I'd ever written," said Rahmanian, who has
never been to Manchester and has only briefly visited Britain.

Despite the play's foreign setting, it struck a chord in the soccer-
mad Islamic Republic.

"I don't think it makes any difference where the story is happening
when it's about football," said Taraneh Alidousti, who plays the part
of Agnes.

The play's central character Frankie is played by Parviz Parastoui,
one of Iran's foremost theatre actors and the lead in the 2004 smash-
hit comedy film The Lizard, about a convict who dons a cleric's robes
to escape the law.

Frankie, head of the household after his parents died in a train
crash on the way to a Manchester United match, rules the home with a
cruel dominance, testing his wife Nancy, and younger brother and
sister Sonny and Agnes on obscure soccer trivia.

But Frankie's grip begins to weaken with the arrival of a taxi driver
who supports fierce soccer rivals Manchester City and whose charms
prove irresistible to Nancy.

Rahmanian, who assembled the script through improvised dialogues
during rehearsals, incorporated the real-life drama of the
disappearance of the World Cup trophy before the 1966 finals in
England to engineer the story's climax.

Frankie finds the trophy and refuses to hand it over. His wife
objects and he breaks her arm in a fight prompting her to leave home
with her beloved taxi driver.

Sonny hands the cup back to the authorities, but the pressure of
defying his elder brother causes him to fall ill and die. Frankie is
finally left on his own.

The main set is a cross section of the Sheltons' home. The walls are
covered with old posters of United players and a clock frozen at the
exact time on February 6, 1958 when a plane carrying the team back
from a European game crashed at Munich airport, killing eight players.

While the dialogue is fast-paced and often laced with humour, the
overall mood is dark and oppressive.

"A hollow and distressed life is the only thing circulating in the
minds of the audience at the end of the play," the Tehran Times wrote
in a review.

Rahmanian hopes audiences learn from Frankie's story. "Prejudice
leads to bullying and dictatorial attitudes inside and outside of the
family framework ... I believe all of us, regardless of our
differences, have a little Frankie inside us and we should confront
him one day," he said.'

'When Manchester United's Academy boys glide from their dressing
rooms at the club's magnificent skill factory hidden deep in the
Trafford countryside, they run past 10-foot high photographs of David
Beckham, Sir Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards, Ryan Giggs and George
Best. "We want them to be inspired," said Rene Meulensteen, United's
skills development coach.

They are inspired. In the ensuing sessions of drills and small-sided
games, the technique, ambition and vision of United's youngsters
borders on the breath-taking. "If this generation carries on
maturing," confided Meulensteen on Monday night, "they will
steamroller everyone at Under-18 level. They'll have skills coming
out of their ears."

Sited adjacent to United's senior complex at Carrington, the Academy
heaved with 10-year-olds dropping shoulders, rolling the foot over
the top of the ball a la Zidane, and executing the type of step-over
that Cristiano Ronaldo inflicted on Benfica the following evening.

At the end, as sweat and smiles lit up the young faces, Meulensteen
gathered the boys together in a circle. "You all have the ability,"
he told them. "But do you have the confidence to play in front of
10,000 people, 20,000, 30,000? Use all your time training. Don't
waste it. Learn. Train hard, work hard. Take responsibility."

The kids ran off, replacing lost fluids with isotonic drinks,
laughing among each other about tricks they had tried out. They all
changed, some pulling on the shirts of their home-town clubs like
Preston and Burnley, and walked into the coaches' room to shake hands
with Meulensteen and his chatty staff.

"Any kid who comes here will leave a better human being, and a better
player," said the Academy director, Les Kershaw. "We try to teach
them right and wrong things. When they come in, they come and shake
hands. 'Hello, how are you.' It's proper. When Sir Alex Ferguson came
once, one of the little lads said: 'Hiya, boss. How are you?' Two
lads misheard him and said: 'Hiya, Bob. How are you?' Bob!"

Laughter is a constant sound at the Academy. Yet there is a serious
issue that United want brought into the open, much as it may
antagonise other clubs. United want to revolutionise coaching of the
Under-9 to Under-11 age-group, focusing more on developing skills in
four-v-four games than contesting blood-and-thunder eight-v-eight
club skirmishes.

Sitting next to the famous 1970 photograph of Bobby Moore embracing
Pele, Meulensteen called for a fusion of English zeal and Brazilian
flair. "In Brazil, if a boy goes on the beach with a nice swimming
bottom on but he hasn't got any skill, everyone says 'you just sit
down'," Meulensteen said. "Here the football culture is more 'get
stuck in'. We are trying to marry the two cultures together. Wayne
Rooney has that character of wanting to win, and the skill to beat
players.

"Why did Eric Cantona, Pele and Romario make the difference? Why does
Ronaldinho? Under pressure, they have the ability to create a better
situation. You can be as physically strong as you want, as tactically
well-organised as you want, but you can never beat players like
Maradona, Cruyff, Best or Zidane. They can unlock defences.

"In the last 15 years, the emphasis has been on physical and tactical
development, not conceding goals and getting something from a set-
play. That's not entertainment. We have been relying on God-gifted
players - Cruyff, Best, Maradona - and once every five years somebody
else pops up. Somebody [Rooney] popped up at Everton a couple of
years ago. We want a development programme that gives us four or five
Rooneys." With United's Academy complex costing a third of the £27
million Ferguson spent on Rooney, it makes sense to groom your own.

"We want players who can do the unpredictable like Rooney,"
Meulensteen continued. "I see too many one-dimensional players at the
top level. We inspire kids to take players on. In the attacking
third, it's all guns blazing. Sir Alex has been totally supportive.
He came and watched what the little kids can do and said: 'Carry on.'
The manager has experience of what it means when local lads come
good."

Pictures of the class of 92, of Beckham, Giggs, Butt, Scholes and the
Nevilles, line the walls of Carrington. Kershaw worked with them and
is passionate about giving tyros time to blossom. "How many clubs
would have taken Scholesy on at 16?" mused Kershaw a few nights
earlier, while watching the Under-9s strut their stuff over on the
club's small-sided pitches at Littleton Road in Salford.

"At 16, we could play Scholesy for only 20 minutes a game. He
couldn't run. He was a little one. Had asthma. No strength. No power.
No athleticism. No endurance. 'You've got a bleeding dwarf,' I
remember somebody said to Brian Kidd [the then youth-teamcoach]. 'You
will eat your words,' said Kiddo. If Scholesy had been at a lesser
club, they would have got rid of him and he would probably not be in
the game now. We stuck with Scholesy, a wonderful technician. How
many caps did he get? Sixty-six?!"

In the 21st century, when street football has largely disappeared,
Kershaw asked Meulensteen to come to Carrington and hone the
techniques of the heirs to the Scholes generation. The Dutchman put
on a coaching demonstration for Ferguson and was appointed
immediately. "Rene has spells working with Van Nistelrooy, Chris
Eagles and Giuseppi Rossi, who all pick at his brains, but his role
is development of young boys," Kershaw said. "He is the best coach in
the world for kids."

Raised in the land of Total Football, Meulensteen's obsession with
encouraging skills dovetailed perfectly with the creed of Ferguson,
Kershaw and enlightened Academy stalwarts like Brian McClair and Tony
Whelan. "Seven to 10 is the golden age of learning, so we work on
their technique at a young age," Whelan said.

"Rene came in," Kershaw continued, "and said it was not helpful to
put Under-9 kids into Premier League eight-a-side football games
against other clubs with mums and dads on touchlines shouting 'get
stuck in'. When we played some teams it was like World War Three.
When we played Man City last year, we had to frogmarch a City parent
from the training ground. He was effing and blinding, telling the
referee he's an effing cheat. When we play City now, I tell the
groundsman to shift the rope away from the pitch so the parents are
20-30 yards back."

United know kids will always be competitive, so they work on their
technique first and are prepared to "isolate" themselves from those
clubs sticking to Premier League rules. "In eight v eight, the three
biggest kids dominate," Kershaw said. "So we decided we would go on a
four-a-side programme of development that initially revolved
virtually solely around technique."

United commissioned a report from Manchester Metropolitan University
which praised the "number of dribbling skills - step-over, drag-back,
Cruyff Turn, feint and others - demonstrated" by the Academy's Under-
9 players while involved in four-v-four games on pitches measuring 25
metres by 25 metres.

Armed with this backing from respected sports scientists, United went
to the Premier League Academy directors' meeting and argued for a
change in the rules, replacing eight-v-eights for the youngest kids
with four-v-fours. As one coach present described it, other clubs
reacted to Kershaw's request as if he had "thrown a hand-grenade at
them".

Kershaw himself said: "The supposed experts at other clubs
went: 'Bloody ManU, if they don't fancy it, they can pull out of the
games programme.' They didn't listen to the argument that what we
were doing was good for kids' development."

Whelan sighed: "On Sunday morning, some clubs will travel three hours
to Newcastle for one hour's football of eight v eights for their
Under-9s. Some of the players stand around a lot of the time. We
refuse to go. It is far better to stay and train at home." As Kershaw
stressed: "Once a nine-year-old has learned a trick, it's like
learning his tables, it stays with him for life."

Evidence that something special was occurring at United could be
found at Littleton Road with the merry bands of Under-9s and Under-
10s, on Carrington's indoor pitch with Meulensteen and the Under-11s
and outside under floodlights with the Under-12s. United have become
the Eton College of football.

Practice makes perfect. "Experts reckon it takes 10,000 hours of
training to make a top athlete," remarked coach Eamon Mulvey. So
United ensure training is fun. "At the start we often put on a five-
minute DVD with tricks from Best, Maradona and Ronaldo. We'll
say, 'Who wants to be Ronaldo? Hands up.' Then they go off and try
the tricks in a game."

All those skills are cultivated and paraded in the four-v-four
contests. "We feel like a voice in the wilderness," observed
Whelan. "We'd love it if someone else did a four-v-four pilot. We
need more allies. We do have some. Derby, Leicester and Liverpool are
good collaborators."

Others aren't. "When we play Huddersfield or Stoke, they are so up
for it because they are playing against United," Meulensteen
said. "They work twice as hard. It's a battle. That cannot develop
players. One manager of another Academy said to me: 'I want to see
eight v eight and a nice cup of tea afterwards.'

"Being technical director of the FA is almost an impossible job
because there are so many narrow-minded people out there. There's a
negative coaching culture in England. It's crash, bang, wallop
coaching. We are different. If someone makes a mistake, nobody has a
go at them."

Kershaw agreed, adding: "Our poorest Under-16s are light-years in
front of anything they have at Bury, Rochdale and all those clubs. We
are producing very, very skilful young boys, who do the tricks and
compete. By the time they are 12, they are ready to enter 11-a-side.

"The Premier League have a set of rules which now need a major
revision. But I am stopping going to Academy managers' meetings. They
just spout hot-air. We have little Tin-Gods trying to do big jobs.
Some clubs are in disarray with their Academies. The Premier League
should be saying: 'You out.' But they won't.

"Barnsley's Academy was magnificent when it was built, but
unfortunately they have hit the buffers, they don't meet the rules so
they should be chucked out. We are continuing to invest. Other clubs
aren't. Chelsea were the worst, but in fairness they will be the tops
now.

"The FA set up a system with Academies to develop kids to win England
the World Cup. I don't care if England don't get in the top 32 in the
world. My job is to get a player in United's first team. But he
doesn't need to be English. Rossi [the Italian teenager] has a
wonderful chance. He's like Jimmy Greaves: left-kicker, tucks the
ball away. But not English."

With Kieran Richardson and Phil Bardsley maturing, the English
production line still rolls at United and will accelerate in the
future. "Some other clubs don't see English nine-year-olds as cost
effective," Kershaw concluded. "Some clubs would rather take a rag-
arsed Irish lad at 16, who is a hardened competitor because the
Dublin and District Schools League is tough but he doesn't have great
technique." And great technique is a quality cherished at the club
that produced Charlton, Beckham and company.'

'Nigerian soccer talent John Obi Mikel finally spoke about his
relationship with Oslo football club Lyn, and his disputed signing
with top English Premier League club Manchester United.

Aftenposten met Mikel and his fellow Nigerians at Lyn, Chinedu Ogbuke
and Ezekiel Bala, at their hotel suite on Thursday, and Mikel took
his first chance to speak his mind openly. Much of the interview
proved unprintable, as he vented his opinions about the Oslo club.

"In the hours before training life is good. It's good after training,
too. But everything in between is boring. The worst is going to the
training pitch every day and seeing faces I don't want to see," Mikel
told Aftenposten.

The Nigerian players have been sharing the $1000-a-day hotel suite
for over three weeks since international football body FIFA demanded
Mikel return to Oslo. Agent John Shittu, who wields the most
influence over Mikel and has claimed that Mikel was coerced into
signing for Manchester United, lives in another room on the same
floor.

"Many Norwegians see people like us and think we're starving. We're
not going hungry. Look where we live. Lyn isn't paying, we are. I can
live without Lyn's money, I don't need it," Mikel said, but admits
that he and his compatriots are still getting Lyn paychecks.

Mikel would not say who was paying for the room and refused to
comment if it was Premier League champions Chelsea, who have also
been linked to the Nigerian talent.

Ogbuke and Bala returned to Oslo when FIFA forced Mikel back, in a
show of solidarity.

"I wanted to cry when we had to (come back). But we had no choice.
FIFA said Mikel had to go. We traveled with him to support our
friend. We want to take care that he isn't harassed," Ogbuke said.

Mikel said he was fed up with playing for a club he doesn't like and
tired of answering questions about Manchester United when he clearly
wants to go to Chelsea.

In the meantime Mikel is counting down the days until the end of the
season, and his attitude appears to be affecting his play. Ogbuke has
played for Lyn instead, and performed so impressively he is likely to
start again in the Oslo derby against Vålerenga on Sunday.

Ogbuke said that he has played well because he wants to keep his
reputation untarnished.

"We like Norway. But there is something in Norway we don't like,"
Ogbuke said, and points out the window to Ullevål Stadium, where Lyn
director Morgan Andersen has his office.'

MAN Uniteds dressing room was BUGGED during the crunch clash with Chelsea.
A transmitter smuggled into their Old Trafford changing area recorded top-secret conversations between boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his stars.
The taped exchanges were offered to The Sun by a middle man, but last night we handed them to United.
United chiefs launched a probe last night to track down the sneaky culprit who bugged their dressing room.
We obtained tapes secretly recorded during their 1-0 win over Premiership champions Chelsea and our man Nick Parker handed them over to Old Trafford director of communications Phil Townsend.
He said: We are grateful to The Sun for bringing this breach of security and privacy to our attention. We have launched our own investigation and if necessary will involve the police.

The cheeky bugger was part of a gang that eluded scores of police, stewards and security staff to smuggle a radio transmitter into the Red Devils dressing room before last Sundays crunch clash.
He tuned into the bugs frequency from a position nearby and eavesdropped on two hours of conversation, which he recorded on two cassettes.
The Traffordgate tapes kick off with inspirational boss Sir Alex Ferguson sending his troops out on the pitch urging them to enjoy themselves.

At half-time, with United already leading through a Darren Fletcher header, the 63-year-old manager can clearly be heard encouraging his players in his unmistakable Scots brogue.
He urges them to move the ball more fluently and gives millionaire stars including Wayne Rooney and Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy tips on improving their play.
He also stresses the need for tighter marking on Chelsea playmaker Claude Makelele warning his passing is a danger.

And he instructs his stars to keep switching the play, stop giving away free kicks and keep the ball AWAY from the Londoners England international captain John Terry in the air.
The players then head out for the second half, with Fergies words of encouragement ringing in their ears.
Forty-five minutes later, they return whooping with delight after clinching the victory which ended the Blues 40-game unbeaten run.
United stars are heard on the tape congratulating each other and urging one another to maintain their winning form.

Defender Rio Ferdinand comments that the win will have silenced the teams critics.
He also praises midfield ace Paul Scholes and is heard questioning a team-mate about his plans for the evening.
Other stars are heard congratulating Fletcher on his winning goal.
Striker Wayne Rooney a former Everton hero asks if anybody knows the score from the Merseyside clubs game.

Hilarious exchanges then ensue as the players watch Sir Alex SWEARING in a Sky Sports interview when asked if he had ever faced such pressure to win.
The recording captures a huge cheer and laughter as the manager spits out the word b*******.
Players then mimic their boss, repeating the swearword amid further laughter.
But the mood changes when Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho is heard giving his post-match interview on the dressing room TV.

As the Portuguese appears, shouts of abuse ring out.
Jeers greet his suggestion that his teams defeat was down to bad luck and his claim that United employed defensive tactics.
Mourinho is heard declaring: We have shown why Chelsea are champions. But a United player reminds him that his team lost.
Fergie, who has been in Dubai this week launching a Man United soccer school, was beside himself with fury last night as The Sun revealed the sensational bug plot.

Our investigators were offered the tapes by a middle man along with further recordings.
He said the gang had already set in motion plans to bug Mourinho and the Chelsea team during their next Premiership match.
They demanded tens of thousands of pounds for the two tapes and MORE if recorded conversations contained juicy information.
The scandal will send shock waves through every Premiership and Football League club.
Officials will be forced to draft in surveillance specialists to carry out high-tech sweeps of all sensitive areas of soccer stadia.

MAN Uniteds dressing room was BUGGED during the crunch clash with Chelsea.
A transmitter smuggled into their Old Trafford changing area recorded top-secret conversations between boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his stars.
The taped exchanges were offered to The Sun by a middle man, but last night we handed them to United.
United chiefs launched a probe last night to track down the sneaky culprit who bugged their dressing room.
We obtained tapes secretly recorded during their 1-0 win over Premiership champions Chelsea and our man Nick Parker handed them over to Old Trafford director of communications Phil Townsend.
He said: We are grateful to The Sun for bringing this breach of security and privacy to our attention. We have launched our own investigation and if necessary will involve the police.

Its been a long time since I last posted (quite simply, I was too freakin busy), so here goes.

First up, great victory by the lads, they deserve every bit of the accolades that has come their way. I admit I was among those who did not think we could win the game - I'd have been satisfied with a draw, though I was hoping we would sneak a win - but the performance left me floored, and made me a believer again. Admittedly, not playing Robben played into our hands, but Chelsea still had the strongest side on paper in the premiership playing for them. Manchester United has the quality to win the premiership, and the champions league. The important question then is why did they not perform against Middlesborough and Lillee? Were they just not arsed to perform, is it that the team can only lift itself for the big games? If that is the case, then it is a very sad situation, but I can only hope that the team builds on from this performance and avoids a repeat of last season where after defeating Arsenal, they went on a miserable run. All that I demand is consistent
performances by the players, and the rest of the world can keep watching as we sweep everything in sight! I truly believe after one game that we can do it, but only if the players put in that extra effort.

Positive points of the game:
Ronaldo showed us what he can do on his day. He kept the Chelsea defenders busy all the time with his direct running and caused them all sorts of problems that prevented them from settling into a rhythm.

Fletcher showed us that he has the talent to perform. Too often, we've seen mediocre performances from him, almost as if he is afraid to do the audacious, but when he tries his best, and sheds his inhibitions, he can be a very good player. Anyone remember the FA Cup semi-final two seasons ago against the Arse (and the final against Milwall?) where Fletcher dominated the center of midfield? We saw that again on Saturday - except it was a domination of the right flank.

Ferdinand reminded us again of why we paid £30m to sign him. Except for an early lapse of concentration, he defended with grit (whats that again??). More performances like that and we can play a gung-ho style of football and yet expect not to concede.

Smithy proved that given time, he can take on Keano's role as a defensive midfielder. Yet again, it has been shown how vital the central midfield role is, as Smithy never let Chelski get comfortable on the ball. Those 3 tackles in as many seconds will never be forgotten.

4-4-2 is the way to go. All our recent good performances have stemmed from a 4-4-2 formation. It works when Smithy plays like hes in the form of his life. It works when the wingers are prepared to go forward at the drop of a hat. It was nostalgic the way we had 4 playing up front at times, it certainly caused Chelsea lots of problems, and they were simply unable to cope with it.

Most importantly, the team showed a lot of soul, and played with the spirit that we associate Manchester United with. Long may performances like this continue.
Btw, Kunal, we played only 2 in the middle (Smithy and Scholesy), and not 4 as you suggested. Ronaldo and Fletcher played on the wings and provided invaluable width for us, and that was what made the difference at the end of the day.

i was in london when we played the arses in the fa cup final this year.
most of my housemates supported the arses and i was very upset by the way
the arses won the game in the end!!!! after the game i went to the shop and
you should've seen all the drunk arses fans running around like maniacs in
the shops with their arses shirts and scarfs! they were pathetic running
around screaming like little kids!!!! i almost got into a fight with them

Damn right you are. I lived in London for 3 years and it was
sickening the way Arsenal thought they are a great club on a level
with United. We've achieved more with even more players. Arsenal
only came to prominence with Viera and Henry but this will all
change soon as one half is gone. Last years cup final is best
forgotten. We wanted it more, we deserved it more and we gave more
than them. If it's any consolation, each time we play them if we put
up that kind of performance......kerching!!jackpot. It was just not
our day.
As for "special one", we made him. When Porto came to Old Trafford
and got a draw in the champions league he suddenly became the talk
of the town and everyone overlooked the fact he is just an
interpreter. But he's here now and we have to live with him. We
won't slip up like last season. We'll frustrate them all the way and
when it comes time for him to choose between the league and Europe
around Feb/March we'll pounce. We always have kicked in around that
time so until then....... be united, be strong because this is
Manchester United and we will not be silenced and roll over like the
Gunners and liverpool did. This time we fight them!

FOOTBALL IS ALSO ABOUT STRATEGIES AND MIND GAMES.

crespo and robben were not on the bench

they would have been vital for the blues as they are quality players

Then loft a deep cross to a seemingly nondescript midfielder, one of those criticised and a player of no known aerial ability, and watch him head in from an improbable angle.

Finally, watch your dilettante defender star in a sterling rearguard action.

Simple, really. You wonder why no one else thought of it first. Manchester United's 1-0 victory at Old Trafford ended Chelsea's unbeaten run in the Premiership, stretching back 13 months to their visit to Manchester City. It says much about Manchester United that they have been reduced to the role of giant killers, albeit giants with aspirations of immortality; first Arsenal - then 49 not out - and now a second seemingly invincible side from the capital.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have now suffered back-to-back defeats and only won one of their last five games. It is hardly a crisis but chinks in Jose Mourinho's formidable and expensively-acquired armour are starting to appear.

A defence recently regarded as unbreachable has now conceded in five successive games. On Sunday, Chelsea were outflanked, beaten by a goal created by the left winger (Cristiano Ronaldo) and scored by his counterpart on the right flank (Darren Fletcher). As Manchester United showed, quick passing to either wing can leave Chelsea's full backs isolated until their wingers drop back or the central midfielders come across to provide cover.

United showed, too, that Claude Makelele can be negated. Attacking on the flanks bypasses his sphere of influence while, when Chelsea regained possession, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy left John Terry and William Gallas unattended to focus on the Frenchman. Man-marking brings to mind the shackling of a flamboyant talent, something Makelele patently is not.

But, of all Claudio Ranieri's eclectic metaphors, the most fitting was his description of Makelele as Chelsea's battery. Stopping him hinders his team-mates as much as the midfielder himself; he is the man they rely on for the failsafe pass, the back-up ball if more ambitious alternatives are not available.

Stop Makelele and you stop Chelsea? Not quite, but it makes for more of disjointed game when the champions are deprived of their usual fluency. But a midfield trio noted for their energy - and all seemingly immune from rotation - appeared a little off the pace; consider the number of times Manchester United had time to shoot from 20 or 30 yards.

Michael Essien was the first man substituted, and it may have revealed the comparative weakness in the Chelsea squad. Mourinho's vision of two players for each position is well known; in midfield, however, the alternatives are perpetual fringe man Geremi, converted striker Eidur Gudjohnsen and the untried Lassana Diarra.

James Beattie's theory, voiced after Everton held Chelsea at Goodison Park, was that Mourinho's men struggled against a more physical approach. Though Alan Smith took no prisoners with his tackling at Old Trafford, adversity, and not the sight of Duncan Ferguson's elbows, appears the rattle Chelsea.

Didier Drogba, their most improved player, is invariably the first to react.

Perhaps his real complaint is a lack of service. It is a telling statistic that Chelsea's last two setbacks in both the Premiership and the Champions League have come by the same scoreline, 1-0. One explanation is that few sides score twice against Chelsea anyway, but it is also indicative of the importance of scoring the first goal. Admittedly, Bolton did so and were still swept aside imperiously.

For Real Betis and Manchester United, however, one goal sufficed. It is a reminder that Mourinho has constructed his side on defensive foundations, that whereas the initial impulse for Arsenal or Barcelona is to attack, for Chelsea it is not to concede.

And an indication that the Portuguese's quartet of wingers are below their sparkling best. Damien Duff has only just returned to fitness, Shaun Wright-Phillips has only shown glimpses of his scintillating best and Arjen Robben scarcely resembles the peerless match-winner of 12 months ago.

In itself, it is an sign of Chelsea's excellence that they can prosper without contributions from outstanding individuals. They may have to do so again; Hernan Crespo has provided the first hint of mutiny since Ricardo Carvalho's summer outburst (has he taken that IQ test yet?).

And it gives Mourinho plenty of food for thought over the international break. Having mischievously declared that he thought his job would be in danger after three successive defeats, he must prepare for an improving Newcastle team aiming for the hat-trick. After blaming the rest of the Premiership for not challenging Chelsea. Manchester United have thrown down the gauntlet. Suggesting a national holiday when Chelsea lose has, at the least, earned him the admiration of the work-shy.

With the cushion of a six-point lead in the Premiership, he can turn his attention to easing the burden on the admirable Frank Lampard for goals, making either Crespo or Gudjohnsen a plausible alternative to Drogba again, revitalising the out-of-sorts wingers and tightening up England's most feared defence.

And, perhaps, to ensure that a scoreline featuring the words 'Chelsea nil' occurs less often than in the last week. Time to tweak the master plan, Jose?

'Uefa are unlikely to get their wish for clubs in the Champions
League and the Uefa Cup to include "home-grown" players in their
squads from next season as it is contrary to EU law, a report for the
European Parliament has concluded.

Arsenal are among a host of leading European clubs opposed to the
ruling as they fear it could mean fielding weakened teams, which was
the case with the overseas player restrictions during the Nineties.

Uefa's scheme intends that from the start of 2006-07 clubs must
include four home-grown players in their 25-man European squads, with
the figure rising to six in 2007-08 and eight in 2008-09.

While the quotas refer to where a player has been trained rather than
his nationality, the study - by Dutch legal institute T M C Asser,
Britain's Lancaster University and Dutch sports consultancy Sport2B -
argued they would indirectly discriminate against foreign nationals.

The report said: "It is quite obvious that most of the home-grown
players would be nationals of the specific state and not foreigners.

The proposed rule would indirectly discriminate [against] foreigners,
making it more difficult for foreign players to transfer to a country
where they were not trained and educated."

It concluded that the rule "will most likely not be able to be
introduced under the current framework of EU law" and called for
consultations across the sport to examine possible alternatives.

One of the key aims of the EU's single market is to remove barriers
to the free flow of labour and goods across borders. Uefa define home-
grown players as those trained by their clubs or by another club or
national academy in the same country for at least three years between
the ages of 15 and 21.'

'In spite of the reluctant posture of Mikel Obi at joining Manchester
United this January when the winter transfer door opens, most players

The gifted Nigerian has been locked in a transfer tussle between
Manchester United and Chelsea. Even though the 1999 European
champions got Obi to sign the dotted lines moments after his 18th
birthday, the Stamford Bridge side, which has money to spend, is also
claiming ownership of the young lad.

Although FIFA had ruled that the player should go back to his club,
Lyn of Norway, there are indications that the club is more willing to
do business with Manchester United and it was the more reason why
manager Alex Ferguson travelled to meet the player a fortnight ago
but the planned meeting failed because Obi refused to show up
allegedly at the behest of his Nigerian manager, Olatunji Shittu.

"Sir Alex understands the lad's problem and he was not disappointed
with his attitude. He sees the behaviour of the player as an over
bearing influence of his manager on him," the player revealed.

Alex Ferguson had hoped to sign Obi as a direct replacement for
ageing captain, Roy Keane.'

I dont think it is a matter of believe of not, it is a matter of being realistic.
As much i dont like it, ManU played terrible the last couple of matches, they even lost in the Champions, something that i never saw soming. On the other hand, Chelsea looked in better posibilities to win the match.
But, i guess it is true when people say that once the match starts all the stadistics are worthless.

i was in london when we played the arses in the fa cup final this year. most of my housemates supported the arses and i was very upset by the way the arses won the game in the end!!!! after the game i went to the shop and you should've seen all the drunk arses fans running around like maniacs in the shops with their arses shirts and scarfs! they were pathetic running around screaming like little kids!!!! i almost got into a fight with them but my brother pulled me away from them i hate the arses and their fans!!!!

i couldnt believe it, was great tele tho....And after smith was
presented with this champagne for winning man of the match the sky
prsenter revealed that smithy doesnt drink, i was soooo shocked i
couldnt believe he doesnt drink but i think its great he doesnt he
focused on football and not drinking !!
